Short-Form Video Ad Planning for TikTok, Reels, Shorts and Meta
How to plan short-form video ads by placement: aspect ratios, hook timing, caption-safe framing, scene length and CTA structure — and how to adapt one concept across platforms.
Updated
Start with the placement, not the platform
Most short-form placements share a pattern: a full-screen vertical canvas, sound that may be off, interface elements covering the edges, and viewers who decide within a couple of seconds whether to keep watching. Plan for those constraints first, then tailor per platform.
Always confirm current specifications in each platform’s official ad guidelines before launching; they change.
Aspect ratios
- 9:16 vertical — TikTok, Instagram Reels and Stories, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels.
- 1:1 square — versatile for Facebook and Instagram feed placements.
- 16:9 widescreen — YouTube in-stream and web embeds.
The first two seconds are the ad
Put the most visually interesting moment first. Open on the product in motion, a surprising action or a bold claim you can support — not a logo animation. Pair the visual hook with an on-screen caption so it works with the sound off.
Caption-safe framing
- Keep faces, products and key action in the upper-middle of a vertical frame.
- Leave room at the bottom for captions and the platform’s interface.
- Use one short caption idea per scene; if it needs two lines, cut words.
A reliable 15-second structure
- 0–3s: Hook — the reason to keep watching.
- 3–7s: Feature or problem — what it is or what it fixes.
- 7–12s: Benefit or proof — the product in real use.
- 12–15s: CTA — a clear, specific next step.
Adapting one concept everywhere
Build the concept vertically first, then reframe: 1:1 for feed, 16:9 for YouTube. Keep the hook identical so you can compare performance fairly, and change one variable at a time when testing — the hook, the angle or the CTA.
In Sardav, the Ad Creator plans this structure as a storyboard. You choose the platform and target duration, pick one of several hooks, and regenerate only the scenes you want to test.
Compliance basics
- Only make claims you can substantiate; Sardav never invents claims, but you’re responsible for the final ad.
- Label dramatized or testimonial-style content appropriately and never present AI-generated people as real customers.
- Use music and assets you have the rights to.
Put it into practice
Sardav applies these principles automatically — and shows you every line.
